What a month it has been for the Good Garbage Podcast team! The team attended the Rethinking Materials Summit in London and we’re still not over how incredibly insightful the whole experience was! The Summit gave us a chance do one of those rare in person recordings with Scott Bolin, the founder of
Scott Bolin, founder of TerraSafe Materials, didn’t come from packaging. He came from creative entrepreneurship, from writing plays and playing guitar, and eventually from licensing 25 NC State patents to build a materials company focused on replacing single-use plastics.
Most startups license one technology. Scott licensed 25 patents across four patent families simultaneously. He explains why he made that unusual call and how the resulting platform breadth, spanning multiple packaging formats and applications, became TerraSafe’s main competitive advantage.
When TerraSafe tried to bring a novel film material to market, they discovered that film makers and pod makers had never worked together before. Scott describes the blame game that followed, and the moment they finally found the right partners to get it done.
Every large packaging partner’s first question isn’t about performance, it’s about supply. Scott explains how TerraSafe addresses concerns about consistency and sourcing before they ever come up, and why supply chain credibility often matters as much as the technical specification.
Getting from a trial to a commercial agreement with a major brand is a long road. Scott walks through how TerraSafe got Chick-fil-A and other large brands to test their materials, what those companies actually care about, and what it takes to cross the line from pilot to purchase order.
TerraSafe doesn’t lead with sustainability claims. Procurement teams have heard those before. Instead, Scott leads with microplastics and health, and explains why that argument tends to get further with people measured on cost reduction rather than environmental outcomes.
Scott’s built and spun out companies before, including a liquor brand. He draws on that experience to explain what sustainable materials startups need to do differently when raising capital, and how to structure early investment when the business model is still being figured out.
The sustainable packaging space is getting crowded. Scott talks about how TerraSafe positions itself within that, and shares which three products in the pipeline he most wants to see reach commercial scale.
