
Kraft paper outperforms poster paper on every structural test that matters for carry bags — burst factor, tear index, handle pull strength — but poster paper consistently gives a smoother print surface, which is why both substrates remain in active use across the Indian converter market. The choice is not about which is categorically better. It is about which properties your end customer’s application actually demands.
Kraft paper and poster paper differ at the fibre processing stage, and those differences show up in every performance property a converter needs to evaluate. Kraft paper is produced via the sulphate pulping process, which retains long cellulose fibres and gives it a high strength-to-weight ratio. Poster paper is a calendered sheet, mechanically pressed to a smooth, semi-glossy finish. That pressing improves surface uniformity but shortens the fibre structure in ways that reduce tear resistance.
In practical terms: a 75 GSM kraft carry bag and a 75 GSM poster paper carry bag are not the same bag. The kraft bag carries significantly more load before the handles fail or the base tears out.

Kraft paper is the recommended default for any load-bearing carry bag. Poster paper has a narrow fit: boutique retail bags below 1 kg load where print quality is the primary commercial driver.
For 70–80 GSM grades from quality Indian and imported mills, kraft paper delivers a burst factor of 28–35, comfortably above the IS 1397 minimum threshold for retail packaging grades. Poster paper in the same GSM range typically tests at 12–18, sometimes lower depending on how aggressively the sheet has been calendered.
Burst factor — the ratio of bursting strength in kPa to grammage — is the critical structural indicator for a carry bag. A loaded grocery or QSR bag places concentrated stress at the base fold, the side seams, and the handle attachment punch-outs. At those points, burst factor predicts whether the bag holds or fails in front of the customer.
Kraft paper for packing and wrapping is specified by IS 1397, which sets requirements by grade. A burst factor around 25 is the commercial floor most retail buyers apply. Poster paper is not covered by IS 1397 at all, because it was not designed as a structural packaging substrate. It was designed as a printing surface.
Tear index follows the same pattern. According to IPPTA (Indian Pulp and Paper Technical Association) benchmarking data, virgin and sack kraft grades tested in incoming QC at Indian converting units typically achieve 8–14 mN·m²/g in the machine direction, dropping to 5–9 mN·m²/g cross-direction. Poster paper at equivalent grammage tests at 3–6 mN·m²/g. Cross-direction values can fall below 3, which is why handle punch-outs in poster paper bags are a known failure point. That failure is a substrate property, not a converting defect.

Poster paper produces a visibly superior print result when the application demands fine halftone reproduction, rich spot colour, or consistent brand colour across a large print run. Bekk smoothness values for calendered poster paper run at 150–300 seconds, compared with 20–60 seconds for unbleached kraft. That difference shows up directly in ink dot gain, colour saturation, and edge definition.
For boutique retail — a perfume house, a fashion label, a confectionery gift brand — this matters commercially. The customer sees the bag before they see the product.
The print quality advantage is often overstated for QSR and grocery carry bags, though. According to flexographic printing research published in PITA (Paper and Board Industry Technical Association) technical bulletins, modern water-based flexo inks on 70–80 GSM kraft paper consistently achieve Delta E colour deviation below 3.0, which is within brand colour acceptance tolerances for most FMCG customers. Extended colour gamut (ECG) flexo has narrowed the visible gap further on simpler designs.
The practical print limitation of unbleached kraft is contrast, not resolution. Dark backgrounds and full-coverage colour areas look noticeably better on poster paper. If the bag design relies on large dark-colour panels, poster paper is the technically correct recommendation — structural trade-offs understood.

Bleached kraft sits between the two: better print contrast than unbleached while retaining the structural advantages of the kraft pulping process. At 15–25% more than unbleached at equivalent GSM, it costs more, but it removes the contrast limitation for converters serving mid-premium retail accounts.
Poster paper is typically priced 8–15% below kraft at equivalent GSM. The lower cost reflects the shorter-fibre pulp blends used in its production. At scale, that is a meaningful procurement difference.
The sourcing picture complicates the calculation, though. Kraft paper, both virgin and recycled grades, is produced by multiple Indian mills — ITC Paperboards, Seshasayee, Sirpur, Star Paper — and is available with domestic lead times of 2–4 weeks. Poster paper in the 65–75 GSM range suitable for carry bags has a narrower domestic supply base. Several converters source imported reels from South-East Asian mills, which introduces lead time variability and foreign exchange exposure.
According to data from the Paper Merchants Association of India (PMAI) compiled in Q1 2026, import-dependent poster paper grades experienced 3–6 week lead time extensions during October-December 2025 due to shipping disruptions. Converters who had switched to poster paper for cost reasons rather than genuine print-quality requirements faced production stoppages.
Supply chain stability is not always the first factor converters consider when choosing a substrate, but for converters running high-volume converting lines on tight delivery schedules, kraft paper’s domestic availability is a practical argument that sits alongside the structural one.
Choose based on what your customer’s application actually demands, not on a generalised preference for one substrate over the other.
Use kraft paper (70–80 GSM) when the bag must carry more than 2 kg reliably — grocery, pharmacy, QSR meal orders. Also when the customer sets structural acceptance thresholds calibrated for kraft-grade paper, which is what retail and QSR briefs do in the absence of any BIS carry-bag standard. Use poster paper (65–75 GSM) when load is genuinely below 1 kg — jewellery, cosmetics, gift bags — and the design requires fine halftone print or full-coverage dark backgrounds. If the customer’s brief is primarily aesthetic and they accept that handle strength is secondary, poster paper fits.
Do not substitute poster paper for kraft in grocery, QSR, or pharmacy carry bag applications. The burst factor shortfall is not compensated by any cost saving, and the failure risk falls on your customer’s shopfloor, not yours.

What GSM of kraft paper is suitable for grocery carry bags?
For bags expected to hold 2–5 kg of mixed FMCG products, 75–80 GSM virgin kraft is the standard specification. Can poster paper carry bags meet a buyer’s structural spec?
Usually not. There is no BIS carry-bag standard to test against, so buyers set their own burst factor and handle thresholds, calibrated for kraft-grade paper.
